Following documented procedures, operators at Merck Cherokee control the function of all types of processing and support equipment involved in the manufacturing of various chemical products.

In the manufacturing area of the plant, duties involve preparation, reaction, isolation, purification, finishing and other chemical process activities. In the utility services department, responsibilities include natural gas supply; steam boilers and steam distribution; electrical distribution; plant air generation and distribution; nitrogen distribution; potable, deionized, and boiler feed water production; low temperature refrigeration; and HVAC. In the tank farm and warehouse areas, operators are responsible for sampling, receiving, unloading, and moving bulk and packaged raw materials in support of the production processes.

Duties of an operator at Merck Cherokee include but are not limited to:

  • Follows standard operating procedures, current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), transportation regulatory requirements, and safety and environmental compliance requirements.

  • Physically moves and charges solid and liquid raw materials used in production batches.

  • Manually operates equipment through the use of switches and valves; requires lifting, pulling twisting, and climbing.

  • Operates computers and control systems (distributed control system) for inventory management and process control.

  • Monitors and takes readings from instruments, accurately completes documentation, and analyzes data recorded.

  • Takes samples of raw materials and process streams.

  • Monitors equipment performance and performs minor maintenance.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • High school diploma and two years’ experience in an industrial, chemical, power plant, or related work environment

OR

  • Technical certification in Process Technology/advanced degree in science or engineering

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations and record basic technical observations.

  • Ability to work around hazardous chemicals, including organic solvents, acids, bases, and beta-lactam antibiotics.

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), including eye, hand, foot, body, and respiratory protection.

  • Good computer skills and the ability to learn new computer applications.

  • Ability to work 12 hour rotating shifts.

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Associates degree (or other advanced degree).

  • Technical certification in Process Technology, or other field relevant to chemical manufacturing.

  • Previous chemical manufacturing or distributed control system operations experience.

  • Experience in a cGMP manufacturing environment (or similarly regulated environment – food, nuclear, etc.).
