Merck Animal Health is seeking an Intern to fill the role of a Formulation/Process Development Scientist at our R&D facility in Rahway, New Jersey. The Pharmaceutical Sciences R&D (PS R&D) department within Merck Animal Health is responsible for developing oral, topical and parenteral formulations, The PS R&D group is specifically responsible for developing products that improve animal health through collaborations across various departments with a strategic focus on identifying and developing differentiating technologies for drug product concepts intended to add value to our customers.

In this position, the Intern will support the progression of molecules from discovery throughout the development process, transforming drug candidates into marketed products. During your internship appointment, you will work closely with an experienced pharmaceutical industry scientist on a research project with key tasks that include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Support formulation and process development of high priority drug candidates.

  • Plan and execute research experiments to develop formulations and processes to improve and enhance the biopharmaceutical performance of the drug product.

  • Develop formulations using commonly employed unit processes involved in drug product development.

  • Perform physicochemical, material and mechanical tests among others to characterize the drug product and ensure drug product robustness against key quality attributes.

  • Effectively communicate and document outcomes of research experiments.

This is a full- time internship position. Housing subsidy is not available as part of this program and must be funded 100% by the student.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Candidates must be pursuing an BS, MS or PhD degree in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or other relevant disciplines

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Candidates must be available for 10-12 week internship

  • Candidates must have working knowledge and understanding of physicochemical and/or mechanical characterization techniques

  • Candidates must have working knowledge of commonly employed pharmaceutical unit operations to manufacture drug products

  • Candidates must have strong personal character and ethics

  • Candidates must have strong oral and written communication skills, including experience authoring technical documents

  • Candidates must have excellent academic achievement and analytical ability

  • Candidates must have good team player and ability to work under the general direction of a supervisor

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • The ideal candidate will have a personal drive for results and a demonstrated history of achievement in pharmaceutical research & development.

  • Candidates with attention to detail, customer focus, and continuous improvement are also important to this role are preferred.
