Merck Director, IP Portfolio Integration in Rahway, New Jersey

Job Description

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is seeking a Director of IP Portfolio Integration to help drive our strategic operating priorities in alignment with the needs of the Intellectual Property organization.

Primary responsibilities are to oversee end-to-end patent and trademark operational integration activities in support of the company’s business development and licensing strategy and to assist in outside counsel and product candidate and marketed product matter management. This newly created position may be required to manage other team members and has a flexible hybrid office schedule based in Rahway, NJ.

A successful candidate should possess a broad range of progressive IP operations experience, prior pharmaceutical/biotechnology industry experience, and strong oral and written communication skills. The candidate should also have a proven ability to lead/represent a function within a matrix organization.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

IP Portfolio Integration

  • Lead the integration efforts for acquired/licensed IP portfolios into the organization’s existing infrastructure and operations

  • Conduct thorough analysis and evaluation of potential acquisitions from an operational standpoint, including financial, technology, and corporate structure considerations

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather and analyze data, identify risks and opportunities, and develop integration plans

  • Communicate effectively with sub-team members, internal stakeholders, external partners, and acquired company representatives to facilitate a smooth integration process

  • Continuously monitor and evaluate the success of the integration process, making adjustments as needed to achieve desired outcomes

  • Serve as a subject matter expert in IP integration processes, providing guidance and support to the organization as needed

  • Represent the organization in a professional and positive manner, promoting our values and culture to potential and current partners

Outside Counsel Matter Management

  • Ensure appropriate records are maintained for matters with domestic outside counsel that are in compliance with the department’s established procedures

  • Manage daily workflow of the outsourced Docketing team and responsible for quality control of the outside counsel docketing module

  • Partner with IP Group Leadership, IP Docketing Manager, and the IP Systems Administrator, to develop best in class/best fit solutions for the IP organization

Product Candidate and Marketed Product Matter Management

  • Monitor our Company’s late-stage pipeline and create and maintain accurate product candidate and marketed product records in compliance with the department’s established procedures

  • Prepare product-related patent information reports to various internal and external stakeholders

Position Qualifications :

Commute/Location:

This role is based at our Headquarters site in Rahway (NJ), with a Hybrid setup (combination of 3 days in-office & 2 days off-site/remote).

This position cannot be 100% remote.

Education Minimum Requirement:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Bachelor’s degree in area relevant to pharmaceuticals, life sciences or biotechnology such as biological science, biochemistry, chemistry, or other relevant area preferred

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in an IP operations leadership role in a law firm or in-house legal department, with background in IP docketing

  • Experience in the pharmaceutical/biotechnology or healthcare industry, with global operations

  • Experience working effectively across a large IP portfolio in a fast-paced environment with competing priorities

  • Exceptional understanding of patent and trademark prosecution rules and procedures

  • Proficiency with IP docketing systems, tools, analytical models, and workflow management tools

  • Strong technical skills; proficient in all Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Legal technology (CMS, DMS, eBilling/Matter Management, SharePoint, etc.)

  • Excellent attention to detail, as well as strong organizational and prioritization skills to allow switching from one area of responsibility to another while maintaining quality

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with experience presenting and concisely communicating complex information to all levels of an organization

  • Ability to be discrete in handling sensitive and confidential information, and a high level of integrity

  • Strong execution skills and the ability to deliver to deadlines and budgets

  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills, able to foster and maintain good working relationships with stakeholders, different functional areas, and external partners

  • Practical problem solver with ability to facilitate and contribute to collaborative decision-making processes and work effectively on cross-functional teams

  • Independent, forward thinker with a constant improvement mentality

  • Demonstrated project management skills and ability to work on several projects simultaneously

  • Prior experience as an IP docketing paralegal with significant responsibilities

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based positions in the U.S. will be working a Hybrid work consisting of three total days on-site per week, generally Tuesday, Wednesday and either Monday or Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence. Expected salary range:

$135,500.00 - $213,400.00
