Merck Senior Scientist, Cytometric Profiling in South San Francisco, California

Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic scientist to join the Cytometric Profiling group at our company's Research Laboratories in South San Francisco. This is a full-time position that requires on-site, laboratory-based work. Candidates should have extensive expertise in flow cytometry panel design, staining, sample acquisition, and data analysis. We have a large fleet of instruments including LSR Fortessas (BD Biosciences), CytoFLEXs (Beckman Coulter), and Auroras (Cytek Biosciences). The successful candidate will have good working knowledge of the hardware, fluidics, and optics involved with flow cytometry, and should be able to troubleshoot common issues. Experience with cell sorting, particularly on Aria Fusion cell sorters (BD Biosciences), is required. In this role, the candidate will be performing the daily instrument startup, QC, and shutdown procedures, as well as helping manage routine instrument maintenance and troubleshooting.

In addition to the FACS Lab responsibilities, the candidate will also support oncology and immunology discovery projects typically involving the profiling of various human, non-human primate, or murine tissues by flow cytometry and/or cell sorting. The successful candidate will work with program team members as well as with other departments to contribute to the preclinical development of novel therapeutics headed to the clinic.

This position requires a candidate who has excellent communication skills and who will enjoy working with a large, diverse group of scientists. The successful candidate will be willing to help both experienced and new users when assistance is needed.

Education Requirements:

  • Either BS (and 6+ years of industry/relevant academic experience) or MS (and 3+ years of industry/relevant academic experience) in Biology or relevant discipline

  • PhD in Biology, Immunology, or relevant discipline plus 0-3+ years of industry or postdoctoral experience

Required Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with Flow Cytometry, preferably with BD Biosciences or Beckman Coulter flow cytometers

  • Experience with Cell Sorting (FACS), preferably with BD Biosciences cell sorters

  • Proficiency with FlowJo data analysis software

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications on the Windows operating system

  • Must be able to lift a 20-Liter box of sheath fluid (45 lbs. each)

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Expertise in Spectral Cytometry, preferably with Cytek Biosciences spectral cytometers

  • Immunology background

  • Biomarker discovery experience

  • Cell preparation for single cell RNA-sequencing

  • Single cell RNA-sequencing using the 10X Genomics platform

  • Proficiency with high-dimensional data clustering and analytical methods

  • Proficiency with TIBCO Spotfire, GraphPad Prism, OMIQ

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Expected salary range:

$125,000.00 - $196,800.00
