The Director of Promotional Medical Education will be responsible for managing a team of promotional Medical Education managers in the development and delivery of branded and unbranded medical education (Med Ed) experiences, to engagement healthcare professionals and drive business results.

This individual works closely with oncology Global and US Brand Leaders to align business priorities and translate strategy into execution, across all approved promotional Med Ed channels (personal, remote and digital). He/she will ensure that promotional Med Ed work commences with a deep understanding of Oncology customers and their needs, and that customer insights are thoughtfully incorporated to create clear, credible and compelling educational experiences. In addition, this individual will ensure that promotional Med Ed resources are compliant with all applicable Global and US regulations and Merck policy.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Works closely with the Oncology Commercial Teams (across Global and Regional) to shape the promotional medical education strategy for assigned oncology brands, and demonstrates deep understanding of customer channel preference and execution segmentation. Leads the promotional Med Ed team to develop and execute plans that are integrated across channels, and have detailed objectives and metrics plans.

  • Co-leads the development of the Oncology medical congress strategy, and manages the execution of the Commercial activities at major domestic and international medical congresses.

  • Team Leadership: Demonstrates strong leadership behaviors to create a high-performing, highly engaged promotional Med Ed team, and drive results in a matrixed organization. Coaches direct reports to maintain compliance, and increase promotional Med Ed effectiveness. Proactively identifies issues/risks and works quickly to implement solutions. Facilitates fast, disciplined decision-making (strategic and executional).

  • Transformational Leadership: Sponsors and leads Strategic Initiatives to improve customer engagement, business results and compliance. Responsible for identifying and embedding industry-leading best practices and innovations in promotional medical education. Operates flawlessly across hierarchical lines in Marketing, Sales, Business Operations, and Regional affiliates.

  • Agency Management: Manages agency partnerships to ensure deliverables are of high quality and aligned to strategic objectives, timelines are achieved, and teams are collaborative and efficient. Accountable for the integration and proficiency of the Agency model for Oncology, and leads future evolutions.

  • Planning and Financial Management: Leads the Annual Budget planning process for promotional Medical Education, in Oncology, and maximizes the promotional effectiveness, customer journey mapping and innovation Maximizes the effectiveness of the promotional budget consistent with financial and procurement guidelines. Accountable for accurate and timely budget management of projects within his/her remit.

Education Minimum Requirement: BS/BA in Business, Marketing or other related disciplines

Required Experience:

  • Minimum of 7 years in Pharmaceutical or Biologics Marketing. (e.g., Brand, Customer or Channel marketing). Demonstrated ability to develop and execute marketing strategy.

  • Minimum of 3 years in Medical Education or Scientific promotion within a Commercial role, in the Pharmaceutical or Biologics industry (e.g., Brand Managers with scientific strategy responsibilities, Advertising Agency, Marketing Communications Center of Excellence.)

  • Minimum of 2 years of direct-line People management.

  • Experience in US and Global commercial business or marketing roles.

  • Product Launch experience in Marketing, Sales or other commercialization functions.


  • Master’s in Business Administration or Masters in Communications

  • Commercial alliance / co-marketing experience with external bio-pharmaceutical partners

  • Oncology marketing experience

  • Excellence in collaboration and driving results with International affiliates and offices.

  • Mastery in communication (interpersonal and written communications).

  • Knowledge in process development and optimization

  • Success in cross-functional leadership: ability to work across divisions and functions to ensure that work progresses effectively and efficiently

  • Demonstrated leadership skills: ability to drive decision-making and results, ability to meet both the needs of the business and the needs of the customer, courage and candor.
