Merck Genetics and Pharmacogenomics (GpGx) is recruiting for a Senior Scientist to contribute to our organization’s efforts in fighting infectious disease to decrease the overall burden of infection on global health. GpGx is part of the larger Translational Medicine Department at Merck and has the unique opportunity to contribute to Discovery, Translational, and Clinical Research. The Discovery Pharmacogenomics Senior Scientist will serve as a technical and scientific liaison to Merck’s renowned Vaccines and Infectious Disease research team. As such, he or she will work collaboratively with the therapeutic area to apply cutting-edge genomic technologies and bioinformatics to enable the identification of novel drug targets, the discovery of new biomarkers, and the elucidation of mechanisms of action to advance the company’s antimicrobial, antiviral, and vaccine programs. The Senior Scientist will be expected to use his or her technical and subject matter expertise to effectively design experiments and perform statistical and/or pathway and network analyses with a strong focus on biological interpretation and application to drug development. The incumbent will communicate results to the program teams and therapeutic area leadership, spearheading both internal and peer-reviewed publications and presentations. The position will require interactions within Genetics and Pharmacogenomics, with disease area biologists, and with an array of other internal and external stakeholders; thus applicants must be team-oriented, with the ability to establish key partnerships and thrive in an inclusionary, integrated, and multidisciplinary work environment.
Education Minimum Requirement:
- Ph.D Degree with 1-3 years experience
Required Experience and Skills:
This is a non-wet lab position, so strong verbal and written communication skills and a solid background in the design, analysis and interpretation of data from genomic studies are necessities.
Experience with data analysis platforms such as MatLab, R, or OmicSoft is required.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
A background in Infectious Diseases (virology, microbiology and/or vaccinology), Immunology or Oncology is preferable, as the new hire will be asked to interface with one or all of these Therapeutic areas on a frequent basis.
A working knowledge of systems biology, population genetics, and/or viral evolution will be viewed favorably, as will any experience in the design and analysis of experiments targeting the immune repertoire or microbiome.
Familiarity with drug discovery across multiple modalities (e.g., small molecule, biologic, cell-based therapy)
